Tough Love
Since the month of February is considered the month for lovers, I thought it would be worthy to explore the meaning of true love. Seems we throw that word around like a comforter on a couch, depending on our mood, but love is deeper than that. Tough Love is what has been stirring around in me lately.
Tough Love is telling the truth, even when it hurts. It’s similar to discipline, which seems grievous for the moment, but the ultimate results are exceedingly delightful. If we just stick our heads in the sand and ignore Godly Counsel and keep doing the same thing, we will get the same results. Nothing changes. Generally, things need to change in all of our lives, because God is changing us from Glory to Glory.
I’ve heard people say, “we just need to love everybody and everything else will fall into place.” It certainly is true that we need to love everybody, nevertheless, tough love is difficult, but often necessary. Things will fall into place alright, but they will probably fall into the wrong places. People need counsel, but sometimes when advice is offered by telling them the truth, it is rejected. Please understand that I certainly don’t have all the right answers, however I do have a fair level of success working in my life that is accompanied by peace, righteousness, joy, understanding, wisdom and favor.
Embracing Truth is the answer. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life” John 14:6a “If ye continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32. If we’ll just stick with the Word of God and do the Word to the best of our ability, God will honor our efforts and continue to work His Plan in our Lives. It’s when we have our own version of “truth” that we get into trouble. The Bible is the Plumbline against which everything else is measured.
Proverbs 16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged; and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. Unfortunately, part of our problem is living a double standard. We want to have God’s approval in our lives, yet we want to do it our way. Ain’t going to happen. We can fool everybody, even ourselves, but we cannot fool God. Let’s ‘fess up, clean up, stand up and look up. Jesus is watching over us and desires to lift us up.
This is not about rules and regulations, laws or commandments. It is all about an intimate relationship with Abba Father who loves us enough to always tell us the Truth.
